Q: What is a Licensed Contractor?

  1. A Licensed Contractor is someone who has met the rigid standards imposed by the State of Florida proving themselves to be qualified to perform certain construction related services.

  1. What must someone do to become Licensed in Florida?
  1. In order to be Certified by The State, a person must demonstrate a numbers of years of actual experience, pass a comprehensive 2 day test, and demonstrate financial responsibility and provide proof of Liability and Workman's Compensation insurance.  They must also take continuing education courses in order to remain current.

  1. Why is it so important to hire a licensed contractor?
  2. A:  You have a reasonable assurance that your work will be done correctly.  If not, you have legal recourse against a licensed contractor.  You have no legal remedy against an unlicensed contractor.

  1. If a person advertises "Licensed and Insured" can I be certain that they are qualified to do my work?
  1. NO!  Unfortunately, many people who advertise "Licensed and Insured" are engaged in misleading advertising.  In many cases, it only means that they have a local business license (something almost anyone can purchase) and that they carry insurance on their vehicle.

The only way to be certain is to ask for a copy of the State Contractor's License and a copy of insurance paperwork.
